Finally a PhD for me!

I’m just posting this for myself so I can come back and look over the classes. This is the program I’m applying to for fall 2010. It will take the place of the PharmD I was going to get but than decided, with my rheumatologist, that it would not be the best decision for my health because the degree requires 80+ hours a week for 5 years with clinicals and lots of lab work (physically exhausting.)

This would be stressful but there is a part-time option, which I would only drop down to if my health forced me to, and honestly, I’m a dork so it will be easy. I got my undergraduate degree in 3 years, graduating at 20 years old and my masters of public health in 1.5 years and have been out of school since 22… Both from a top ranking school and both while working full time jobs within the health field.

I’m so freaking bored doing nothing!! It’s been a year!! AHHHHHH. I want to get this degree in 3 years. I want to have my PhD by 30. I should have just stayed in school and finished it by 25 but I wouldn’t trade my experiences and the certifications I’ve picked up while teaching middle school health….

Sleeping Beauty

Sleeping-BeautyA fairy tale of rape and cannibalism.

A beautiful tale in which they all live happily ever after. Or do they?

In 1697, a French author named Charles Perrault published a classic book titled Tales of Times Passed. Today the book is better known as Mother Goose Tales. Seven of its eight tales have become classics for children. I’m sure that you know some of these: “The Sleeping Beauty in the Wood” (Sleeping Beauty), “Little Red Riding Hood”, “Blue Beard”, “The Master Cat: or Puss in Boots”, “Diamonds and Toads”, and “Cinderella”.

Perrault, however, did not write any of these stories. They were all re-workings of stories passed from one generation to the next. These stories were actually very cruel and downright nasty in their original form. Perrault simply cleaned them up and let everyone live happily ever after.

The earliest known written version of Sleeping Beauty was actually published 61 years earlier by an Italian named Giambattista Basile.

Here is how the story was originally told:

A great king was forewarned by some wise (old?) men that his newborn daughter named Talia was in great danger. It seems that a poison splinter was in the palace’s flax, and it would destroy her. The king immediately ordered a ban on flax inside the palace walls.

But, as all great fairy tales go, Talia somehow encountered a flax-spinning wheel and got that nasty splinter in her finger. What happened?

Talia dropped dead.

As a result, King Dad placed his daughter’s body on a velvet cloth, locked the palace gates, and left the forest forever and ever.

Enter the great nobleman, who turned out not to be so noble. While hunting in the woods one day, he just happened to stumble on the abandoned palace and Talia’s dead body. One would think he kissed her at this point, but no such thing happened.

Instead, he raped her.

He planted the noble seed and nine months later Talia gave birth to twins, a boy and a girl. Their names were Sun and Moon (which is the boy and which is the girl?) and the fairies took care of them.

One day, the boy was sucking on mom’s finger and sucked out the poisonous flax splinter, causing Talia to awake from her death bed.

Many months go by and the horny young nobleman returns to the woods to have another encounter with the princess. To his surprise, he found her alive and well. He confesses that he is the father of her children and they enjoy a hot weekend fling in the hay (Would you have a love affair with your rapist?).

The nobleman then returns home to his wife. Somehow she learns about his illegitimate children. The wife orders the capture of the children. Her cook is then told to slash their young throats and to cook a hash with their flesh.

At dinner that night, the wife gleefully watches her husband eat his meal. When he has finished, she announces “You are eating what is your own!”.

We can be sure that the nobleman did not feel too well at that moment. But then, he did rape a dead woman, so he deserves a little suffering.

It turns out that the cook had a soft heart and never slaughtered the children. Instead, goat meat was substituted.

The enraged wife ordered the capture of Talia and that she be burned at the stake, but she was saved from death by her rapist and they lived happily ever after.

Why didn’t Walt Disney use this version of the story? It is so much more interesting than the modern version.

It is unfathomable the depths of mental illnesses. Garrido truly believes he can help other sex offenders. It is sad that we have not been able to help a large number of people who suffer. Now with that being said, this man (and his wife) need to be punished to the full extent, they have RUINED the lives of not only Jaycee and her daughters but her family and friends who have suffered in her disappearance.

(CNN) – Phillip Garrido had a story to tell — about how God helped him overcome the evil inside him.

The campus at the University of California at Berkeley was his pulpit, and he hoped his neighbors and customers of his printing business would become his flock.

He wanted to share his story with anyone who would listen, including law enforcement.

Just days before he was arrested and an 18-year-old kidnap mystery was solved, Garrido walked into an FBI office in San Francisco, California, with a stack of documents.

The purported writings were a two-part manifesto. First he discussed the “Origin of schizophrenia revealed.” Some who know him say Garrido spoke of having schizophrenia and attention deficit disorder.

In the second part of the documents, Garrido detailed his struggle with sexual urges, in writings he titled “Stepping into the light.”

In the documents, obtained by CNN, Garrido confessed his past aggressive sexual impulses, but said he is no longer that man.

Garrido and his wife were charged last week with crimes relating to the abduction of 11-year-old Jaycee Lee Dugard in 1991 and her captivity in a hidden shed-and-tent compound in the couple’s backyard in Antioch, California. They pleaded not guilty to charges of rape, kidnapping and false imprisonment.

After his arrest, Garrido said documents he gave to the FBI would be key, that they would help people understand who he really was. He told a local television reporter the documents would show a “heartwarming story,” one that helped him “completely” turn his life around.

The documents provide a glimpse into the mind of a man who said he thinks he has a God-given gift. The power to control minds with sound was his salvation, he said, and would help others before they committed violence.

He wrote that he wanted to share his story to provide “solid hope for everyone who suffers from the many forms of aggressive sexual behavior as well as other problematic behaviors.”

Garrido spoke of his sexual urges during his trial in 1977, when he was convicted of abducting and raping a 25-year-old casino worker in a mini-warehouse. He spent 11 years in jail for those crimes. He testified about his sexual fantasies, which included masturbating while reading magazines, watching movies, and in restaurants or bathrooms.

In his writings, he detailed how hard it was for him to control himself. Garrido wrote that he realized he couldn’t control his impulses and they were plaguing the ones he loved.

“Certain behaviors cause a great deal of pain in myself and those who are victimized by those behaviors, especially our family and my wife,” he wrote.

That pain made him try to change from the predator he had become, he wrote.

He said he began forcing himself to look at attractive women, but would not allow himself to act.

“See how beautiful she is to look at,” he would tell himself.

In time, Garrido wrote, he began to stop physically acting on his feelings.

As time went on, Garrido wrote, he kept those sexual compulsions at bay, beginning with controlling masturbation, which he said in the past had often taken place in public.

He wrote that he became free and able to experience sexual enjoyment for the first time with his wife, though it was unclear whether he was referring to Nancy, his legal wife, or to Dugard, the mother of two of his children.

He claimed he realized how wrong he had been in the past.

“I realized I never needed to act or do the things I used to believe was so great and stimulating,” Garrido wrote, referring to what he called “one of the most powerful freedoms imaginable.”

“I began to weep telling her ‘I am so sorry for the things I did in the past,’ ” Garrido wrote about his wife, adding that he experienced a feeling of remorse he never had before.

hat feeling of salvation was something Garrido believed was a gift. He said he thought it meant it was up to him to help other sexual predators turn their lives around.

“It will begin to open a new pathway for us all. God willing, I will be teaching this and other skills Christ is providing for me in the prisons throughout the U.S. as well as overseas,” he wrote. http://www.cnn.com/2009/CRIME/08/31/garrido.documents/index.html

LOS ANGELES —  EXCLUSIVE: Three Americans “tourists” are on their way home from Cambodia Monday after being arrested in an on-going federal sex tourism investigation.

The arrests are part of “Operation Twisted Traveler,” an effort by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement to identify and prosecute sex tourists to Cambodia.

The suspects — whose names will be released by ICE officials at an L.A. news conference Monday — are allconvicted child sex offenders who served time in U.S. prisons. After their release investigators say they all headed to the most destitute neighborhoods in Cambodia, one of the poorest nations in Southeast Asia, where it is believed that they once again sexually assaulted young boys and girls.

FOX News was given exclusive access to the suspects and video of their arrest.

One of the men allegedly bought a 13-year-old Cambodian boy for $2 and a bag of rice, and raped him five times.

As one of the thousands of Western pedophiles, this 41-year-old California sex offender thought he could get away with the crime by escaping to Cambodia, the capital of the billion-dollar sex tourism trade in Southeast Asia.

But local police and U.S. investigators had the American under surveillance.

Now, he and two other California pedophiles are on aboard a jet landing Monday morning in Los Angeles from Tokyo.

Another of the men on board is a 74-year-old police call the ‘Pied Piper of Pedophiles.” He spent nine years in a California prison for molesting as many as 500 boys.

After his release from Atascadero State Hospital, where he refused treatment, records show he traveled to Southeast Asia at least eight times, where sources say he rode his motor scooter through the poorest neighborhoods of Cambodia’s capital Phnom Penh, dropping a trail of U.S. dollar bills, to lure young boys back to his home where they were allegedly sexually assaulted.

The third man, a 59 year-old convicted of 18 counts of sexual intercourse with minors in 1995 in Menlo Park, was caught molesting a 10 year-old Vietnamese girl in an area called Kilo 11, a haven of child brothels 11 kilometers outside Phnom Penh.

“Cambodia in particular has been known for some time as a pedophile haven because there’s been a broken justice, no rule of law, and actually no laws on the books that would have been enforceable against these types of activities until recently,” said Jeff Blom, an investigator with International Justice Mission.

“We need to change the fear equation, make pedophiles fear going to jail.”

Cambodian police say other victims were believed to be given $5 or $10 after each sexual act and the children were photographed naked. Mothers of two of the abused boys lived on the street and sold their boys for $100 because, they said, “they needed the money.”

Investigators say all three sex offenders lived in or just outside the capital city of Phnom Penh while on their multiple trips to the Asian region in the last few years.

In the U.S. the men face charges under the Protect Act – a 2003 law that provides life terms for child sex offenders with prior convictions, a much longer sentence than offender would get abroad.

Investigators say the men are part of a thriving billion-dollar sex tourism business. After a crackdown in Thailand on child sex, the industry has moved primarily to Cambodia where pedophiles molest Vietnamese girls and Cambodian boys with little risk of being caught.

ICE hopes the arrest, done in conjunction with federal prosecutors in Los Angeles, Cambodian Police and two anti-child trafficking organizations, International Justice Mission and the human rights organization Action Por Les Enfants, will send a message that police are watching. Since 2003, ICE has arrested 70 international sex offenders under the Child Protect Act.

So by now you have probably heard about Jaycee Dugard who was kidnapped and raped for over 18 years! She and her 2 children (father is the kidnapper) were freed during a probation meeting her captor took her to. The story is unbelievable and she and her children’s have a long road of healing ahead of them.

What the hell is happening in the sex news?!

1. The Aussie Rugby scandal: apparently 5 professional rugby players had group sex with a 19 year old girl while 6 other rugby teammates were in the room watching. But coworkers of the 19 year old unnamed girl have come forward saying she was bragging all over work about the group sex with the famous rugby players. Five days after this event she goes to the police about the incident. Was this a case of shock than realization or a scam to get money? I don’t know but I will be following this story closely.

2. A 26 year old man gets on his bicycle and bikes 180 miles from PA to MD to have sex with a 15 year old girl he met online. Nothing out of the ordinary here as far as online predators but this may be the first case I’ve seen with such extreme bicycle skills.

3. JetSky or some British airline is trying to offer an in-flight wedding ceremony. I guess it would be cool to be married in the air, but really its just a commuter plane with strangers on it. They also haven’t figured out how to make the marriage legally binding because of the fact that it isn’t technically happening in Britian… I think I’ll pass on this.

4. Same sexing it up. So we are getting a lot of states looking to legalize same sex marriages. Check to see what your state is doing and contact your representatives if you feel strongly about this topic – I really don’t want people to comment about their beliefs – save your energy for the email to your rep.

5. Miss California. She is the reason I don’t want to hear you believes on politically charged topics (primarily same sex right & abortion.)  But if you care for the update, apparently thedirt.com is saying they have a sex tape of Ms. Prejean. I hope it has a lesbo scene – how fucked up would that be???

6. Separate cases – same MO: the mother of a 9 year old and a pharmacist  are being charged with creating fake sex ads (think craiglists erotic services) of another person. The mother created a profile of another 9 year old who is her daughters rival, the pharmacist used private patient information that breaches hippo laws.
